Hiking up Mt. Gulugod Baboy

When I was invited by a friend to join her group for a mountain climbing trip, at first I was a bit hesitant. For one, I haven’t really “mountain-climbed” before. And second, I don’t know anyone from that group. But since my inspiration for starting the new year is all about trying new things & meeting new people, I gave in & decided to join.

Being at the peak of Mt. Gulugod Baboy is simply beauty on its most natural form. The green grasses is just perfect for the refreshing wind, & who would not love the romantic panorama of the Batangas bay, all for your eyes to conquer? Everything reminded me how beautiful the world is, & that there is more to life than chasing careers or romance.

“Gulugod Baboy” is a Filipino term for “pig’s spine”. The summit of the mountain resemble that of a pig’s spine in a certain angle.

The jump-off is in front of PhilPan Resort in Anilao, Mabini, Batangas. You’ve probably heard of Anilao as a popular diving destination. Yes, it is the same Anilao, so, part of everyone’s itinerary should be a dip to any of the beach resorts in Anilao. Isn’t that a great combination?

Around 10AM, we started our ascent. The first part is  the paved road going uphill. This one is easy, & me & my friends are even joking if we can hire a tricycle instead on our way to the top.

After 10 minutes, the real trekking/climbing begins.

The weather was just perfect. The sun is on its full shining glory but the trees around the mountain provide the much needed shade & breeze.

There are houses along the way which will gladly welcome you if you needed to seat & catch your breath.

Despite being classified as an easy/beginner climb, 2 hours of steep strolling is not a walk in the park. It may be for some, but for a novice mountain climber like me, it was a constant effort & struggle. As this was a “fun climb”, we took our time, & rest whenever the need arises.

The trek lasts around 2 hours, including rest & photo ops along the way. When the trees begun to disappear, that means you’re almost there already!

The 360-degree view at the summit is just breathtaking.  Though it has its distinct characteristic, being at the summit reminds of Batanes. The perfectly landscaped grasses is just amazing! Add to that your perfect view of the whole Batangas beach.

What’s good about Gulugod Baboy is that the beach is just a few steps away. This is a perfect way to relax your weary muscles from that tiring trek.

After a short dip at the beach, we then hurriedly left Anilao in the hope to catch the sunset at Tagaytay.

We weren’t able to catch the sunset, but we ended our trip with a sumptuous dinner (of Bulalo, Crispy Pata & Sisig) in one of the restaurants in Tagaytay. We all deserve a “good” meal after that tedious event!

    • Hi Rap, no. :-) The 60php is just the entrance fee to the resort. You’ll have to pay additional for the cottage. Unfortunately, don’t know the overnight fee. Thanks! :-)
